Bere Architects has unveiled this image of its glass pavilion and landscaping works for Monument Square in the City of London, due to be opened on January 31. The pavilion, commissioned by the City, is designed with more than 100 pieces of angled mirrored glass on the roof reflecting the golden orb at the top of the 1670s Monument, which will be seen by visitors standing at the top of the landmark.
A new public square will also be created by pedestrianising part of Monument Street. The pavement will be resurfaced in York and Caithness stone and granite. The area around the pavilion will be landscaped and an oak-decked garden suspended over the derelict basement of the former Canoe House, to create an attractive outdoor seating space.
The project is part of the City of London’s Street Scene initiative which employs designers to improve public areas reclaimed from traffic. It is the subject of an exhibition at New London Architecture.
